About the press

A small press with a long view of place

Dalcairn Press is an independent imprint working from the Scottish Highlands. We publish books shaped by story, place and lived experience, and we take the time each one needs.

Where we work

Carefully run, deliberately small

Dalcairn Press is run as a small, carefully run independent press, not a large corporate publisher and not a single-title author website. Each title on the list is considered in its own right, and each is given the attention a book of lasting value deserves.

Our list runs from illustrated Scottish local history and folklore to warm, humorous true-life writing and narrative non-fiction about the everyday systems we all live within. The subjects differ; the care does not.

Our approach

Story first, then the page

Titles are commissioned and developed with close attention to their lived experience, their subject and their reader. We look for writing that is rooted in a particular place or a particular life, and we work with authors and illustrators to shape it carefully before it reaches print.

Design and production matter as much as the text. We pursue handsome typography, considered illustration and durable print standards, so that each book is a thing worth keeping on a shelf for years.
